If the sun is creating harsh shadows when taking photos outside, use flash to force extra light on your subject and fill the shadows.

Flash is traditionally used at night or indoors, but it can be really helpful outdoors in the daytime. If the sun is creating harsh shadows when taking photos outside, use flash to force extra light on your subject and fill the shadows

Ryan T Fisher Flash can be used for creativity aswell

Nathan Cool Photography True, but straight on, non-diffused flash can also leave a shot looking contrasty. I prefer to pop a diffuser on the speedlight, or bounce off a reflector if possible.

Paul Edward Varner TTL-BL .... a great great thing. Many times you still gotta kick it up a few notches to balance against the sun .... but soooo much better to have your subject NOT squinting by being sunward.

Michael F. Yost Very easy to do with fast primes. Remember that a flash depends on aperture for light control and ANY shutter speed below sync is just fine. Use your Exposure compensation to 1 to 1 1/2 stops underexposed with a flash and you should have a great exposure.
